Our 30 workstation lab utilizes Mac OS X, Microsoft Office, Accelerated Reader, STAR Early Literacy, STAR Reading, Math Facts in a Flash, Follett Automated Library System, and Kid Pix Publishing software.
All workstations have internet capability, with access to World Book Online for research purposes and Quiz List Interactive for online Accelerated Reader information.
Our network is protected from outside sources and from inappropriate access to websites using a firewall maintained by Sonic Wall. This service blocks websites based on content, imagery, and keywords. We also have the capability to block any sites we deem inappropriate for educational purposes.
Homerooms in grade 1-4 attend the lab weekly for 30 minutes; grades 5-8 attend for 45 minutes. Instruction in basic computer knowledge, keyboarding, word processing, internet research skills using search engines, directories, and meta search engines. All students use Microsoft Word, but starting in 5th grade we use PowerPoint and Excel. In addition to these programs, the students learn about digital media and how to incorporate those tools into education.
